This semester, the PHC Running Club partnered with the PHC International Justice Mission (IJM) Club to host an Aloha-themed 5K and 1.5-mile walk, uniting Patrick Henry College students and Purcellville residents in support of IJM’s mission to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable communities.
Centered on IJM’s mission, the event aimed to raise funds and awareness in the fight against human trafficking. PHC alumna Marcia Washburn (Class of 2024), who played a significant role in the Running Club as a student, helped organize and promote the event.
"We raised over $1,250 for the IJM Club, which will go directly to raising awareness about and fighting against human trafficking," said senior and IJM Club member Ben Arroyave.
Hosting events like this allows PHC students to engage meaningfully with the local community while building unity on campus. Early that morning, participants gathered in the BHC lobby, pinning on race bibs and slipping on leis.
"We had over 100 runners and walkers from the community and those affiliated with PHC. It was a welcoming atmosphere with Hawaiian decorations, a balloon arch, and some lovely refreshments after the race," Ben said.
When the race began, runners took off along the course, with walkers following behind at a more relaxed pace. Participants made their way back to a balloon arch outside the BHC, where they were welcomed across the finish.
"I thought there was a great atmosphere as people were competitive but were having fun at the same time," said Amelia Ruiz, President of PHC's IJM Club.
"I could tell students were especially excited to be a part of something that was both fun and competitive," Ben said.
Afterward, everyone gathered for refreshments, an awards ceremony for top student and non-student runners, and a raffle made possible by donations from local Purcellville and Leesburg businesses. The turnout—and the support behind it—reflected a strong connection between the college and the surrounding community, all coming together in support of IJM’s work.
"At PHC, it's really easy to focus only on your studies," Amelia said. "I think having events like this is a good reminder of why we are studying and working hard in college. The gifts of reason and health can be used for God’s glory in service to others."

Patrick Henry College exists to glorify God by challenging the status quo in higher education, lifting high both faith and reason within a rigorous academic environment; thereby preserving for posterity the ideals behind the "noble experiment in ordered liberty" that is the foundation of America.
