PHC Moot Court Champions Honored by Loudoun County

Dr. Graham Walker, Dr. Frank Guliuzza, Andrew Ferguson and J.C. Cartee accept the Resolution of Commendation from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors

Patrick Henry College President Dr. Graham Walker and members of the College’s championship moot court team appeared before the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Tuesday, March 6, to accept a special Resolution of Commendation for the team’s recent success. Accompanying him to the meeting were Dr. Frank Guliuzza, Dean of Academic Affairs at PHC and one of the moot court coaches, and team members J.C. Cartee and Andrew Ferguson, winners of the 2012 ACMA National Moot Court Championship in January. This latter was PHC’s fourth consecutive national ACMA championship and its sixth in the past eight years -- the only institution that has won more than a single title.

At the March 6 meeting, the Board of Supervisors honored Patrick Henry College alongside several high school sports teams from the area that had just won Virginia AA state championships. Supervisor Clarke, who read the resolution, commended PHC, which “defeated all opposition and claimed first place and third places, among others, at the ACMA National Championship at Chapman University School of Law on January 13, 2012.” The resolution went on to commend the team for its “unprecedented victories and outstanding achievements.”

“Having defeated the likes of Oxford, Harvard, Brown, and Yale, Patrick Henry College has consistently proven itself a forensic force to be reckoned with,” states the resolution. “This latest victory pitted PHC against the nation’s 80 top teams, eight of which respectively came from Patrick Henry College.”

The nine-member Board of Supervisors governs Loudoun County, a 520-square-mile are in northern Virginia where Patrick Henry College resides, and sets county policies, including land re-zonings and exceptions to the zoning ordinance. A PHC alum, Josh Fornwalt (Government, ’10), currently serves as a staff aide to Supervisor Suzanne M. Volpe from Algonkian District.
