Merit Scholarships

PHC values a wide variety of significant accomplishments and seeks to reward students who have demonstrated excellence in forensics competition, courage, service, leadership, or music. To apply, a student must complete the admission application, the admission interview, and be admitted to the College. Some merit scholarships require an additional application; details for each scholarship are below.

A student may qualify for more than one scholarship from among academic, merit, endowed, and need-based aid. Qualification is not a guarantee that multiple scholarships will be combined. The number and amount of awards is based on available funding each year. The College seeks to steward the resources made available each year to assist as many students as possible.

Fall 2019 Scholarships

PHC Forensics Scholarship

Annual Award: $1,000 to $10,000

Renewal Requirements: Dependent on the level of participation at PHC, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0

Description: Awarded to students who have participated in high school debate, moot court, or mock trial and commit to participate in PHC Forensics. Please submit your forensics resume and a sample video (5-8 minutes in a practice round or round of competition) to the Office of Financial Aid. Your resume may be in any format that you choose, and the video may be in the form of a DVD, thumb drive, or YouTube link. A list of forensics activity within your Application for Admission may be used for your Forensics Scholarship application, but you must specifically request that it be used for scholarship consideration by notifying the Office of Financial Aid.

 

Trivium Scholarship

Annual Award: $1,000 to $5,000

Renewal Requirements: Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

Description: Awarded to students who have benefited from a classical education. This Scholarship is available to home-educated, ACCS-member/affiliate schools, private, or charter school students who have been educated with a classical curriculum for at least two years of high school and have achieved a cumulative 3.0 GPA in high school.

Requirements:

  • A reading list of the top 10 books, beyond Scripture, that have influenced you in your classical education. 
  • At least two paragraphs that answer the following questions:
    1.  Expound on one of the books listedhow has it influenced you?
    2.  How has a classical education shaped you?

Leadership Scholarship

Annual Award: $1,000 to $5,000

Renewal Requirements: Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Description: Awarded to students who have demonstrated leadership and/or community service experience in a variety of settings. 

Requirements: 

  • A resume of activities during high school, including descriptions of all leadership and/or community service positions and hours invested.
  • At least two paragraphs that answer the following questions:
    1. What was the most formative leadership and/or community service experience on your resume, and why?
    2. Which leader (mentor or historical figure) do you strive to emulate the most, and why?

J. S. Bach Music Scholarship

Annual Award: $500 to $2,500

Renewal Requirements: Recommendation from the Director of Music, participation and leadership in PHC music programs, and a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0.

Description: Awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding music preparation and potential to become musical leaders in one of the College’s musical organizations as evidenced by application materials and audition (see forms below). The deadline is February 1, 2019.

Hudson P. Shedd - Strategic Intelligence

Annual Award: $1,000 to $5,000

Renewal Requirements: Dependent on the level of achievements in Strategic Intelligence special projects and internships, and a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0. 

Description: For Strategic Intelligence majors only. Up to two academic awards per year, and additional awards based on demonstrated financial need as documented by the CSS Profile.

The Christopher J. Klicka Courage Award

Annual Award:  $500

Renewal Requirements: Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA every semester (except for reasons of health or other good reason as approved by the Dean of Students.)

Description: This annual scholarship, which automatically renews for up to four years if ongoing criteria is satisfied, will be awarded to the student(s) who exemplifies the character attributes that were so much a part of Mr. Klicka’s life: servant leadership, humility, dedication to cause, and service to others. The purpose of the Christopher J. Klicka Courage Award is to recognize and celebrate the life and work of Mr. Christopher J. Klicka in the areas of home education, servant leadership, and faithful courage while enduring the hardships of a sixteen-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

AWANA Scholarship

Award: $1,000

Renewal Requirements: One year, non-renewable

Description: Awarded to students with verification of Citation award from AWANA. To apply for this scholarship, a student must click here by December 1 to notify the College of intent to complete the Citation Award.  After completion, the student must send verification of a Citation Award from AWANA to the Office of Financial Aid.

 

W.B. Thornhill Memorial Scholarship

Annual Award: $2,000

Renewal Requirements: This scholarship is not automatically renewable

Description: Awarded to students who have served/were employed (or having served with honorable discharge) in the U.S. military, or whose parent is a fallen hero. To apply for this scholarship, a student must click here by December 1 and submit proof of service/employment. Up to two accepted students may receive this scholarship each year.

 

Bible Bee Scholarship

Annual Award: Up to $3,000

 

Renewal Requirements: One year, non-renewable

Description: This scholarship is awarded to a Finalist in the National Bible Bee competition and the National Bible Bee Game Show. He/she must enroll at PHC as a full-time degree-seeking student prior to turning 20 years old. A student must click here to notify the Office of Financial Aid by March 1 of their intent to apply for the scholarship.
