Types of Merit Based, Application Required Scholarships

PHC values a wide variety of meritorious qualities and seeks to reward students who demonstrate robust intellect, courage, speech, service, leadership, or musical talent. Unlike our other scholarships, these do require an application. Read below to see how to apply and view more details for each scholarship.

PHC Forensic Scholarship

Annual Award: $1,000 to $11,000

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: Dependent on the level of participation at PHC, and a cumulative GPA of 3.0

Description: Awarded to meritorious students who have participated in high school debate, moot court or mock trial and desire to participate in PHC Forensics. Please submit your forensic resume(s) and a sample video (1 to 2 practice rounds or rounds at a competition) to the Office of Financial Aid by the deadlines listed below the scholarship information box. Your resume may be in any format that you choose, and the video may be in the form of a DVD, thumb drive or YouTube link. A list of forensic activity within your Application for Admission may be used for your Forensic Scholarship application, but you must specifically request that it be considered for scholarship consideration by notifying the Office of Financial Aid in writing (email).

 

The Trivium Scholarship

Annual Award: $2,500 to $5,000

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Description: Awarded to meritorious students who have benefited from a Classical approach to education. This Scholarship is available to home educated students and traditional private school students who have been educated under a rich Classical curriculum for at least the last two years of high school and maintained a cumulative 3.0 GPA in high school.

Students will demonstrate their qualification for this scholarship with following supporting documents: 

  • A reading list of all books read in high school, required and for pleasure.
  • A completed Trivium Scholarship Form, filled out by a School Official or Home Educator, demonstrating the integrity of the Classical foundation by providing contextual information about the education model and curriculum(s) used.
  • A minimum 500-word essay demonstrating the student's understanding of a classical education and its value, answering the questions: (1) How has a Classical foundation shaped you? and (2) How do you think a Classical education at the undergraduate level will prepare you for life?

 

PHC Leadership Scholarship

Annual Award: $2,500 to $5,000

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Description: Awarded to meritorious students who have demonstrated respectable leadership skills in a variety of settings. 

Students will demonstrate their qualification for this scholarship with following supporting documents: 

  • A resume of activities that the student has been involved in during high school, including descriptions of all leadership positions and hours included for a particular activity.
  • A letter of recommendation from an employer or adviser who can affirm the student's leadership acumen.
  • A minimum 500-word essay answering the questions: (1) What do you believe is the most valuable leadership quality? and (2) What initiatives would you like to implement at PHC that would make it a better place?

 

PHC Community Service Scholarship

Annual Award: $2,500 to $5,000

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Description: Awarded to meritorious students who have demonstrated humility and service in a variety of settings. 

Students will demonstrate their qualification for this scholarship with following supporting documents: 

  • A resume of all community service activities that the student has been involved in during high school, including missions and church service.
  • A letter of recommendation from a pastor or community leader who can affirm the student's activities and heart for service.
  • A minimum 500-word essay answering the questions: (1) What experience taught you the most about Christian service? and (2) What service project would you like to implement in the PHC community?

 

J. S. Bach Musical Scholarship

Annual Award: up to $2,500

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: Recommendation from the Director of Music, participation and leadership in PHC music programs, and a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0.

Hudson P. Shedd Scholarship (SI)

Annual Award: Up to $10,000

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: Dependent on the level of achievements in SI Special Projects and SI Internship activities

Description: For Strategic Intelligence majors only. Up to two students per year awarded based on academic performance only, and additional students based on financial need as documented by the CSS Profile. Students interested in being considered for the Shedd Scholarship must submit a written (or emailed) request to the Office of Financial Aid.

 

The Christopher J. Klicka Courage Award

Annual Award:  Up to $500

Duration: 4 years

Renewal Requirements: Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in every semester except for reasons of health or other good reason as approved by the Dean of Students.

Description: The purpose of the Christopher J. Klicka Courage Award is to recognize and celebrate the life and work of Mr. Christopher J. Klicka in the areas of home education, servant leadership, and faithful courage while enduring the hardships of a sixteen year battle with multiple sclerosis.

This annual scholarship, which automatically renews for up to four years if ongoing criteria is satisfied, will be awarded to the student(s) who exemplifies the character attributes of servant leadership, humility, dedication to cause, and service to others, that were so much a part of Mr. Klicka’s life. Students interested in being considered for the Christopher J. Klicka Courage Award must submit a written (or emailed) request to the Office of Financial Aid.
