Introduction
The goal of the literature major is to train students to shape the culture by engaging with and writing great literature. Students who successfully complete the program know the classics of Western literature; are familiar with important scholarship and criticism; craft interesting and intelligent literary criticism; work with other writers as literature creators and critics; imitate and learn from the classics; understand the business aspects of writing; develop career goals; learn from other writers, critics and scholars; and take part in valuable internships.
Program
Students majoring in Literature study the great works of European and American literature. They take two semesters of English literature and one semester of American literature. As part of major electives, they must take classes in either fiction or non-fiction writing, study a genre, and focus on one main author. Additionally, they expand on areas of interest by developing Directed Research & Writing projects in literary studies or creative writing.
