“My studies not only fostered a critical understanding of literature and a sharpening of my writing abilities, they also fostered a soul that loves truth, goodness, and beauty as rooted in the threefold personhood of God.”

"Through the English program at PHC, I was taught how to fully appreciate the Logos and understand literature as a sacramental experience. By reading and using words well, we participate in a creative act, initiated by the Author and Perfector of our faith, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:2). Through the department, I was able to present my research at a literary conference. Additionally, I had the honor of serving as editor-in-chief of our literary journal, Westmarch, and had several pieces of my writing published there as well.

Dr. Hake and Dr. Grewell pour themselves out to their students and truly love this discipline. I believe their stewardship and my classes at PHC prepared me well as I begin to pursue a PhD in English. I am so excited that the department is growing, both in its number of students and faculty. I wish everyone at PHC could major in English."

"Literature encourages a habit of mind that grasps abstracts in such a way that any white-collar position is learnable to an English major. Also, the study of literature develops the moral imagination. To get lost in literature is to set aside the whips of raw ambition and naked power and look for the truth instead. I found that after studying literature, I was not prepared for a specific career, but rather any career.

Upon graduation, I landed a job as a middle school English teacher in Indiana.  In the years I taught middle school, I drafted six complete curriculum maps, moved into teaching technology courses, and developed a tool for complex auto-analysis of testing data, all while teaching a full load of classes. PHC left me easily capable of the work

After three years, I left the field of education. I now draft estate plans, deeds, and purchase agreements for a rural law firm, which practice I was able to pick up speedily, and during the inevitable gaps in that business, I am constructing and encoding a system of autogenerated documents which I hope will significantly increase our output. I take great joy in doing so. I know the LORD takes great joy in me doing so, and so I take all the more joy for knowing that."
