J. Allen Blocker serves as Director of the Strategic Intelligence Program and Assistant Professor of Strategic Intelligence at Patrick Henry College. He leads the program and its curriculum, adapting both to emerging technologies and an evolving national security environment while preserving the classical liberal arts foundation and applied learning that distinguish the program and its graduates. His teaching focuses on strategic intelligence, national security, emerging technologies, and the ethical application of artificial intelligence from a Christian worldview.
A retired U.S. Navy commander, Professor Blocker brings more than thirty years of experience in military aviation, aerospace engineering, intelligence, technology development, and organizational leadership. He served as an operational F-14 Tomcat pilot and instructor before graduating from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and conducting developmental flight testing of naval aircraft, sensors, weapons, and navigation systems. He later held leadership and engineering positions at the National Reconnaissance Office, where he managed national security spacecraft and communications programs and helped develop innovative applications of small satellites and space-based intelligence capabilities.
Professor Blocker previously served as Associate Chair of Aerospace Engineering and Director of Astronautics at the U.S. Naval Academy. There, he led the astronautics curriculum and small-satellite program, developed courses in space operations and remote sensing, and mentored student teams designing and building experimental spacecraft. He subsequently led aviation safety, strategy, and policy for Project Loon at X, Google’s advanced-projects organization. He continues to advise national security organizations and technology companies through Sydrus Aerospace, LLC, the aerospace and national security consulting firm he founded.
His professional honors include the National Reconnaissance Office Director’s Gold Medal, the Director of National Intelligence Achievement Award, the Society of Experimental Test Pilots’ Jack Northrop Award, and recognition for the outstanding thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School. At Patrick Henry College, he draws upon his experience as an aviator, engineer, educator, and intelligence practitioner to prepare students to pursue truth with intellectual rigor, exercise sound moral judgment, and serve God faithfully in positions of national responsibility.
