Sentinels Victory over Carroll

The Sentinels face off against Carroll Community College

This past Saturday, the Sentinels soccer teams continued to build on their successes with a doubleheader victory against the Carroll Community College Lynx.

Women's game

The Sentinel women's soccer team started off the day strong with a 3-1 domination. Throughout the first half, both the Lynx and Sentinels fought to find the goal. The Lynx started the scoring by playing a cross through the Sentinels’ box for a weak-side attacker to tap the ball in. The Sentinels responded after junior Leah Bucher played a ball to sophomore Heidi Otis, who was able to hit a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the goal, sending both teams into halftime with a 1-1 tie.

Going into the second half, the Sentinels started out strong with their next two goals occurring consecutively within the first fifteen minutes. Once again, Otis and Bucher combined for the goal, but this time Heidi Otis played the ball to Leah Bucher who snuck the ball under the Lynx’s goal keeper. Then the Sentinels finished off their scoring with an unassisted goal from freshman Noel Hurst, when she intercepted a weak pass from the Lynx back line and exploded to the goal for a successful 1v1 with the keeper.

With this win, the Sentinel women’s soccer team sits with a record of 3-1-1. The ladies will look to extend their unbeaten streak to 5 as they take on the Garrett Community College Lakers on October 3 for homecoming.

Men's game

Coming off their wins against Crown and ABC last weekend and tempered with their loss against Williamson just the day before, the Sentinel men were prepared to play hard against the Lynx. Their teamwork and effort paid off immediately within the first five minutes of the match when freshman Jonathan Hartman took a set piece and played a beautiful ball to senior Isaac Bedrosian, who connected and found the Sentinels’ first goal of the match.

The Sentinels’ next goal also came off a free kick, this time taken by Isaac Bedrosian and tapped in on a header by junior Owen Caughron.

The Lynx were able to also slip a goal past Sentinel goalkeeper Noah Jackson before the end of the first half, sending the teams into halftime with the Sentinels ahead 2-1.

With halftime finished, the Sentinels stepped back on the field looking to solidify their lead quickly. With a burst of speed and pressure from junior Josiah Jackson, the Lynx, rattled, made a mistake by passing the ball to their goalkeeper, who subconsciously picked it up and immediately got called for a handball. For the third time in the game, the Sentinels were able to take advantage of a set piece and find the back of the net. Three Sentinel players stood over the free kick, trying to decide the best way to get a shot off effectively before ultimately having Freshman Zane Wirkkala make a short pass to Isaac Bedrosian to take a shot and notch his second goal of the match, putting the Sentinels up 3-1.

The game wasn’t over, though! With six minutes left in the game, the Lynx’s speed attack was able to draw a penalty kick and score, bringing them one goal closer to tying the game. Then, with two minutes remaining, a Lynx player AGAIN drew a penalty kick and the opportunity to bring the teams level as the game drew to a close. Noah Jackson stood in the goal. Watching. Waiting. Would the Sentinels fail to close out a game that they had been leading in since the beginning whistle?

The Lynx player stepped up to the ball, waited for the whistle and then shot! The ball sailed right over the top of the goal! HE MISSED! The Sentinels were still in the lead 3-2! There were still two minutes left in the game, but ultimately it was not enough time for the Lynx to create another opportunity, and the Sentinels were able to finish the game with a win and now a record of 3-4-0.

The Sentinels men’s soccer team returns to action on September 26 when they face off at home against the Mid-Atlantic Christian University Mustangs at 1pm.
