How one alumna is working with New Guard Press to empower young writers

In a media landscape often dominated by older voices, many pundits claim to speak for Generation Z. PHC alumna Evie Fordham Solheim (Class of 2019) is helping young conservatives find their own voice.

She recently accepted the role of Director of the Chesterton Media Fellowship, a new project of New Guard Press (NGP). Under her leadership, the Chesterton Media Fellowship will train the next generation of conservative writers and provide an on-ramp into media.

"Through the fellowship, we’ll be empowering young writers to share what it really means to be a young conservative today," Evie said.

Evie will mentor a small cohort of writers, guiding them as they brainstorm, write, and publish one op-ed per month over a six-month period. NGP will help them place their pieces in a national outlet. The fellowship will also provide resources like training webinars with expert journalists.

"My goal is to get to know each of them individually so I can help them write pieces they’ll be proud to have in their portfolios for years to come," Evie said. Recently, NGP announced the 2026 Chesterton Media Fellows. Among them are Cooper Cobbs and Grace Plath, both upperclassmen at Patrick Henry College pursuing degrees in Journalism & Digital Media.

The tagline for the Chesterton Media Fellowship is "cultivating swordsmanship of the pen.” Evie emphasized that putting forth a positive vision for the culture is the fellowship’s most important goal, stating, "I’m going to help these young writers learn to cut down the lies that pervade our culture, but our goal isn’t just to destroy and expose. It’s to create and inspire."

That commitment to truth is reflected by the Fellowship's namesake, author G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton was known for advocating for truth with wit and winsomeness. He did not just write fiction; he also wrote numerous newspaper columns, which skillfully combined his knowledge of Scripture, literature, and history. The mission aligns closely with the training offered at Patrick Henry College. Students in PHC's Journalism & Digital Media Program, like Grace and Cooper, are uniquely equipped for the Chesterton Media Fellowship—and a future career in writing and media.

PHC emphasizes rigorous academic and practical training alongside a biblical worldview. The College not only offers expert writing instruction but also trains students to develop the character, wisdom, and insight necessary to combat cultural lies while creating work that offers a compelling alternative.

PHC also provides its students with real-world preparation for careers in journalism. Alumni have contributed to The Federalist, The Daily Signal, Fox News, Fox Business, The American Conservative, and more.

Evie herself, who holds a degree in journalism from PHC, is a great example of that preparation paying off. With experience in major media outlets and a growing portfolio of published work, Evie now turns her focus to mentoring the next generation—helping young conservatives not only enter the media landscape but shape it.

Evie said, "I don’t expect these young students and recent graduates to have answers to all of society’s ills, but I know that they have stories and ideas inside of them that other people will want to read."
