PHC Sentinels and fans after win at Bucks County CC

The Patrick Henry College Sentinels women's team traveled to Pennsylvania on Saturday, to close out the season with a game against Bucks County Community College. The Sentinels came away with a convincing 70-50 victory to make a satisfactory end to the season. The Sentinels had struggled the past three games as the flu went through the team and this led to several players having to miss games, and others trying to gut it out despite being sick.

With eight healthy players to face BCCC, the Sentinels applied strong defensive pressure, got several steals, and raced out to a 17-6 lead midway through the first quarter. The home Centurions settled down and it was a back-and-forth game with PHC taking a 36-25 lead into the half. Bucks County came out strong to start the second half and cut the lead to six at 40-34. The Sentinels then changed up their defensive scheme and this triggered a 24-3 point run to effectively end the game, as PHC had a 64-37 lead midway through the last quarter.

Freshman point guard Liana Devore had another outstanding game, shooting 50% and led the team with 42 points. This was her second 40-point game of the season, after her school record 45 points against NOVA earlier this season. Sophomore Gretchen Whittington had an excellent game as well, pulling down 12 rebounds and adding 6 points on 3 for 4 shooting. Sophomore Amelia Ruiz and Junior Hannah Kim each contributed 9 points in the win.

Coach Rick Weitz said after the game, "This was a great way to end the season. We played great defense and offensively, the Centurions were unable to contain Liana, who gave us many key baskets. It was also fantastic to see a large contingent of family members who made the trip to Pennsylvania for the last game. With their cheering, it felt like a home game!"
