PHC fans gathered on Thursday night to watch the Lady Sentinels, fresh off a recent sixty-point victory, compete against Northern Virginia Community College at home.
The first quarter was an offensive showcase, as the teams consistently traded back-to-back buckets with the score remaining close throughout most of the quarter. The NOVA Nighthawks, however, were able to pull away slightly in the final two minutes, ending the quarter 21-30. PHC’s rookie sensation, Liana DeVore, said, “We needed to front #4 in the post, potentially double-teamed her, and have more help defense.” NOVA’s Kristen August (#4) was unstoppable down low, scoring 20 points just in the first half and 30 in the game.
On the offensive end, the Sentinels played well with DeVore’s 36 points and Gretchen Wittington’s numerous offensive rebounds that led to second-chance points. Amelia Ruiz and Grace Banks combined for 25, which kept the Sentinels within striking distance, but ultimately, Patrick Henry was unable to close the game and fell to the Nighthawks 92-65.
The Sentinel’s team captain, Hannah Kim, went down in the fourth quarter with a minor ankle sprain. She is listed as questionable for the next game against Christendom. The young freshmen are going to need to step up even more as PHC competes against their biggest rival without their veteran player. Despite the loss to NOVA, the game showed that they can hold their own against even the most talented teams on their schedule.
