PHC Chess Club

PHC's chess club strives to glorify Christ through the art of chess. Chess is one of the oldest games still played today and one of the most popular in the world.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "The game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it, so as to become habits, ready on all occasions. For life is a kind of chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are, in some degree, the effects of prudence or the want of it."

Playing the game of chess with some adequacy is a basic skill that well rounded people should possess, similar to dancing, public speaking, handwriting, and singing. The chess club acknowledges that not all people have a natural aptitude for chess just like not all people are excellent singers or superb dancers. However, that does not mean a basic understanding is not beneficial. With this in mind, the chess club seeks to train players who are brand new to chess, as well as refine the skills of those who have played for over a decade.

The chess club encourages all students to consider joining the club to glorify the Father through developing and stretching the minds he gifted to us.
