Emily Jashinsky, culture editor at The Federalist, host of Federalist Radio Hour, and director of the National Journalism Center spoke to students at PHC.
This fall, the Young Women for America chapter, along with their co-host, the Clare Boothe Luce Center for Conservative Women, organized an event for Emily Jashinsky to discuss important issues surrounding conservative journalism.
Jashinsky discussed “liberal bias in the media—why it occurs, the common demographic of journalists in DC, and how to keep the media accountable even if you’re not a journalist,” said Sarah Merly, President of PHC's YWA chapter. The talk was open to all students, journalism or not. The YWA club offered snacks and professors offered extra credit for attending
Strong connections through PHC internships paved the way for this event. Senior Anna Jankowski interned for the Clare Boothe Luce Center for Conservative Women (CBL) this past summer and was able to get in contact with Jashinsky through them.
“[Jashinsky] was really sweet and interested in getting to know us and chatting with us,” Merly said. Several students interested in internships at Young America's Foundation spoke and had the opportunity to talk with her about her experiences after the event.
The YWA chapter on campus just started this fall, and Merly spearheaded the mission. The chapter is focused on prayer, education, and advocacy. They visit protests, hold meetings, and attend conferences as a club over the school year.
“I chose the journalism major here because empathy is such a big focal point of journalism. Dr. Sillars wants us to get to know people as deeply as we can every time we write a story, and to be creative and have a good interview, but also keep it a conversation and ask the deeper questions of life,” Merly said. “It’s built a lot more compassion in me. I think it’s also helped me to see more just how many stories there are behind everything.”
