2007 Teen Leadership Camp counselors share memories from last summer!
Strategic Intelligence
Date: June 8-14, July 20-26
Cost: $625
Description: Strategic Intelligence camp at PHC Teen Leadership Camps stands out among its excellent peers. Unrivaled in excitement and atmosphere, this camp treats campers to dead drops, double agents, interrogations, and renditions – all orchestrated to complement daily classroom instruction and to highlight the ethical dilemmas that a Christian working in this field must face. Whether the students are debating real-world decisions in policy briefing scenarios, learning from experienced and energetic classroom speakers, or conducting missions “behind enemy lines,” they get the rare chance to experience the intricacies of a simulated intelligence world on the beautiful (and safe) campus of PHC. SI camp is more than Hollywood spy-hype, including thorough introductions to all facets of the intelligence community for students who are interested in pursuing a career in intelligence, analysis, diplomacy, counter-terrorism, or law enforcement.
College Prep
Date: June 15-21
Cost: $525
Description: From writing and studying to applications and exams, college academics are very different from high school. It is essential to prepare for college now by beginning to develop the skills you will need to succeed after high school, especially if you plan on attending a school like PHC where academic rigor is high. College Prep Camp provides key workshops to prepare high school students for the next phase in their lives. Classroom sessions and focus groups will explore topics such as college writing, entrance exams, the college application process, and learning styles. It will also give campers an opportunity to learn more about their vocational skills as they begin the process of discerning God’s plan for their lives after high school—and beyond—all within the context of the classic Teen Leadership Camp experience.
Moot Court: National Security
Date: June 22-28
Cost: $525
Description: In a post September 11th world, the boundary between upholding national security and protecting individual freedoms is becoming increasingly hazy. Moot Court: National Security provides an opportunity for students to explore these issues under the leadership of Dr. Michael Farris, PHC Chancellor and coach of PHC’s national-championship moot court team. A traditional law school and growing undergraduate activity, moot court prepares students for the rigors of arguing a case before the United States Supreme Court. This camp will introduce campers to appellate advocacy and sharpen their reasoning and public speaking skill by preparing arguments for a camp tournament focused on a simulated national security case. Participation in a previous PHC Constitutional Law Camp is helpful but not necessary to fully participate in and enjoy the Moot Court Camp.
Drama
Date: June 22-28
Cost: $525
Description: Movies. Acting. Theatre. Everyone loves good entertainment. But what does it actually mean to put on a production? Drama Camp, coordinated by PHC graduate and former Eden Troupe Director Kelsey Stapler, includes opportunities to act, write, and learn. This camp explores everything from ethics in acting, stage movement and acting technique, the mechanics of actually producing a play, and improving Individual Events for NCFCA competitive speech events. Drama camp includes a fieldtrip and culminates in a student production that will give campers a chance to apply the knowledge gained from classroom sessions and daily acting instruction and drills. Kelsey Stapler has directed and starred in several PHC Eden Troupe drama productions, and has extensive background in speech competitions and NCFCA individual events.
Debate
Date: July 6-19
Cost: $1050
Description: This summer's debate camp will feature two action-packed weeks of intense instruction, practical application, and fun. Based on the National Christian Forensics and Communication Association's debate league and topic, debate camp will focus on three main areas: the 2008-2009 policy debate topic, debate theory, and practice in debate strategy. Debate Camp will culminate in a policy debate tournament where the skills and knowledge gained can be directly applied. There will be a novice and experienced track to provide the best learning experience for all participants. Most importantly, experts in the policy area will come to help uncover the complexities of the topic, providing an excellent working knowledge for debaters to jumpstart the competitive season. This camp will be staffed by PHC coach and award-winning debater Isaiah McPeak, and led by PHC rhetoric Professor, Dr. James Tallmon..
Roots of Leadership
Date: July 6-12
Cost: $525
Description: Are you interested in being a Christian leader in today's culture? If so, the Roots of Leadership camp is for you. This camp uncovers what it really means to be a Christian leader and features a variety of presentations by PHC faculty members, coordinated by PHC graduate and former Teen Camp Director, Lindsay See. The Roots of Leadership Camp explores ideas of servant leadership and apologetics, concepts like liberty and the foundations of American government, and challenges campers to grow in leadership by living a life of purpose. It is the perfect camp for everyone interested in changing the world around them.
Worldviews in Literature
Date: July 13-19
Cost: $525
Description: Everybody has a worldview. Every author has a worldview. Every literary work embodies a certain attitude toward life; it assumes certain answers to the "big questions" that artists and philosophers have always asked: Where have we come from? Where are we going? Does human history have any purpose? One of the best ways to really understand a worldview is to look at the way it is embodied in literature. Literature reveals the nerve endings of human experience, giving us a better appreciation for how blessed we are in Christ, and how lost those are without Him. Come learn from Dr. Steven Hake, Chairman of the Department of Classical Liberal Arts, and examine eight major worldviews through important literary texts by authors such as Kafka, Camus, and Hemingway. Learn about worldviews in literature and enjoy an exciting week of camp, including a fieldtrip to watch an area drama and analyze the worldview it portrays.
