We’ve got what it takes to finish our new student center building!

Click here to read the full story.

Here’s how it happened.

God has been at work at Patrick Henry College since its founding in 2000 to enable the College to achieve nearly all the key milestones of a new college, including

  • Recruiting a strong student body
  • Hiring an outstanding faculty of scholars who love Christ
  • Creating a robust and professional administrative team
  • Attaining accreditation

But two final pieces of the College’s foundation still need to be put in place.  We must complete the basic campus (classes, offices, library, dining commons, athletic and recreational space), and we must also secure a wide foundation of regular donors to support our scholarships to students.  The Barbara Hodel Student Center, now under construction, represents the biggest element of completing the basic campus.  For our students, this wonderful new facility will become the centerpiece of campus life and provide the kind of recreational and social opportunities that students at other colleges take for granted.

A generous donor family has just taken a dramatic step to “Finish the Foundation” of Patrick Henry College by advancing both of our key remaining goals.

This generous family has guaranteed the funds necessary to complete the Barbara Hodel Student CenterAs a result, we have just told our builder to go full speed ahead to completion.  Of course the donor family anticipates that other major donors will ultimately join them in funding the building.  But their guarantee means that the building should be open for use by the start of the fall 2009 semester.

This donor family understands that Patrick Henry College’s long-term success depends on having a broad donor base; that is, having a large number of people who care about the college and provide financial support for our scholarship fund even at modest levels.  This is the key to sustaining our scholarships, and thus our basic operations, year after year.

To achieve this, they are challenging us to do something that we can do.  They are asking the PHC community—all of us—to put our all-out effort for the next 12 months into asking new people to become supporters of Patrick Henry College’s scholarship fund.  We will justify the donor family’s confidence in the College and its mission if we meet the following goals by December 31, 2008 (all amounts reflect cumulative annual giving, not necessarily one-time gifts):

  • Reach the level of 5,000 total current donors to PHC
  • Obtain 1,000 new donors who give $1,000 or more (as an added incentive, gifts at this level qualify a donor for membership in the new Patrick Henry College Society)
  • Obtain 2,000 new donors who give at a level from $100 to $999
  • Obtain additional new donors at any level

You can ensure the success of this incredible challenge by becoming a volunteer fundraiser “Ambassador” for Patrick Henry College, and by making a gift yourself.   If every student, parent, faculty and staff member, and trustee brings just four new donors to the College over the next twelve months, we can secure both completion of the new building and significant funding for scholarships.  While we cannot possibly match the financial commitment made by the challenge grant donors, we can contribute by bringing new friends and supporters into the PHC family.  Our generous benefactors want others to learn about, and invest in, our educational mission for Christ and our country’s future.

We are grateful to this generous donor family who cares deeply about the future of the College.  Their decision is a clear answer to prayer, and demonstrates God’s provision for His work.  They have shown their confidence in all of us.  Now we have a responsibility to fulfill our part.

Completion of the Barbara Hodel Center is within our reach!
