Parliamentary Debate is one of the most exciting and difficult forms of collegiate debate. Not only must participants have all of the skills and dedication needed for policy debate rounds, they must also be able to think on their feet, know vast quantities of information about world affairs, understand parliamentary procedure, and have the courage to go into a round without knowing what the other team may be arguing.
Patrick Henry College's Parliamentary Debate program is one of the most rewarding extracurricular activities that the College offers. Students have competed in tournaments from California to Pennsylvania and gained national attention by defeating traditional debate powers such as Cedarville and Notre Dame. Parliamentary debaters maintain a high level of knowledge in many areas of study as debate topics range from Greek philosophers to the effects of the Federal Reserve.
The ability to synthesize and utilize vast amounts of information in a clear and convincing manner is helpful for any student. PHC students are challenged daily in classes to develop these skills. Thinking logically and rapidly are valuable skills in many areas of life at college and beyond. Those who choose to participate in Parliamentary Debate at Patrick Henry College will find the experience to be challenging and sometimes mind-twisting, but Christian students will see that the discipline prepares them to present and defend truth.
