Mission
The mission of the Patrick Henry College Music program is to develop and exercise the musical gifts and talents of its students in a way that honors the Lord, represents the college with distinction, and prepares and motivates students toward life-long service. We believe that every musician is both a leader and a teacher who must therefore model robust musical skills enabling him to: serve in a variety of musical contexts, make valid musical decisions autonomously, and possess communication skills that empower him to become an inspirational leader in the musical enterprise. This highly skilled musician is a servant leader who transparently shepherds others toward Christ through artistic excellence and fidelity to the Holy Scriptures.
Vision
Our vision for the next five years is to fully utilize the facilities dedicated to music study in the Barbara Hodel Student Center. When completed, the music facility will include: 12 practice rooms and 4 teaching studios with pianos, a large rehearsal room, a teaching classroom with an electronic piano lab, a music lab with computer stations equipped for music study, and an acoustic shell designed for music performance to be used in the large meeting area. Additionally, we intend to see at least 30 students enrolled in the Music track of the Classical Liberal Arts major and have received approval for the launch of the fully formed music major.
Music Opportunities:
J.S. Bach Scholarship: Established in 2009, this scholarship was created to enable and encourage the growth of musical leaders in various disciplines.
PHC Chorale: Concert performances, campus events, and community presentations have created beloved traditions for the student body and have established relations with the greater Northern Virginia community.
Classical Liberal Arts Music Track: With the sound classical training of the Classical Liberal Arts major, students in the Music track will be equipped to steward their gifts and abilities well while receiving additional instruction in an applied music area, music history, music theory, conducting, pedagogy, and philosophy.
Chapel Guild: Students in Chapel Guild groups are characterized by hearts for service, stewardship, and a desire to encourage fellow students in the Gospel. The Chapel Guild members lead music in all the College’s plenary chapel meetings.
PHC Youth Music Academy: The YMA is a consortium of musical ensembles comprised of high school and middle school students and meets once a week on the PHC campus for rehearsal.
Musical Offerings: Opportunities to participate in music on the PHC campus include: piano, the PHC Chorale, chamber music ensembles, music chapels, and many local venues.
