History of the United States I (HIS103L)
Course Description
How did the United States come into existence? This is the question that will guide us as we look at American history from 1492 through the Civil War. The course considers major events in American history, such as discovery, colonization, the War for Independence, the Andrew Jackson phenomenon, and the Civil War. It also explores the intellectual, religious, and political threads that helped guide the people who made America into the United States during this formative period of history. In addition to reading a textbook and the professor’s lectures, students will also consider primary source documents. A key feature of the course is frequent exchanges between the professor and students as well as student-to-student discussion. Students will take several exams and will write one major paper.
