Attic Greek I (GRK113)

Catalog Description
Attic Greek is the ancient Greek dialect of the Golden Age of Classical Athens and the language of the philosophers Plato and Aristotle, the orators Lysias and Demosthenes, and the historians Thucydides and Xenophon. Attic Greek differs from the Epic Greek of Homer and the Koine or Common Greek of the New Testament. Teachers of Greek generally agree that it is easier for students who learn Attic Greek first to go on to Epic or Koine Greek than the reverse. So, even if one's goal is to read Homer or the New Testament in Greek, it is best to begin learning Attic.

The Directed Correspondence Course in Attic Greek will:
·  Give you an advanced start on college Greek
·  Allow you to work at your individual pace
·  Supply the assistance of a Patrick Henry professor of Greek

The texts for this course are Anne Groton's From Alpha to Omega: A Beginning Course in Classical Greek together with Jon Bruss's From Alpha to Omega: Ancillary Exercises and an online Course Manual with audio files on the pronunciation of Greek.

When you receive these materials, you may begin working on the lessons. As this is a traditional correspondence course, you will complete lessons sequentially and submit them via U.S. Mail. They will then be corrected, your grade will be recorded, and the assignments will be returned to you. There are 25 Lessons total in the course. There are also two examinations: a midterm and a final.
