2010 Lessons & Carols service with the PHC Chorale |
Lessons & Carols tells the story of Christ’s advent through a series of readings, hymns and carols, with audience participation. The PHC Chorale, under the leadership of Dr. Steven McCollum, creates a worshipful atmosphere in the Barbara Hodel Center’s arching Grand Foyer every year, inspiring audience members with the true meaning of this Christmas season.
“As we participate in the worship service, the Scripture and music challenge us to make new connections in our understanding of Christ’s nativity, His plan for humanity, and how we are to live in response to this plan,” says Dr. McCollum, PHC’s Director of Music. He explains that, for the students involved in the Chorale, the service builds “cognitive connections between classical learning, our Christian faith, the pursuit of Truth and Beauty, and the pursuit of Christ-centered excellence -- all within the context of Christian worship.”
The overall purpose of PHC’s CLA: Music track is to build servant leaders, equipped with the mindset and the musical and spiritual disciplines to serve with music throughout their lives. Lessons & Carols and the many other musical outlets at PHC “create an appetite” for this sort of life by deepening students’ experience of times when theory has joined reality, says Dr. McCollum.
“I recommend to people that they attend Lessons & Carols because this outcome is available for all who participate,” Dr. McCollum states. “Our capacity to appreciate Beauty in light of His Truth is also expanded.”
Please make time to join us this Saturday! Visit the Lessons & Carols website this weekend for webcast information.
