In the first annual 5k race and bake sale sponsored by Patrick Henry College’s Alumni Association, students raised $2,058 towards furnishing the gym in the new Barbara Hodel Student Life Center, adding to the money already raised by alumni, for a total of $5,083. The event was part of a challenge by PHC Chancellor Dr. Michael Farris, who asked the alumni to raise $10,000 for the Hodel Center’s used gym equipment.

“The Alumni Association desires one day to become one of the biggest donors to PHC,” said PHC Alumna Sarah Pride, citing the vision of Association president Mike Hengemuhle. “This 5k and other efforts to raise money are one small step in that direction.”

Seven alumni volunteered to manage the event, which 60 students and three alumni completed on the Washington & Old Dominion Trail. Other alumni donated funds.

John Vinci, Chair of the Technology Committee for the Alumni Association, said the 5k was a chance for current students to meet alumni. The alumni worked directly with current students in the planning and execution of this year’s 5k.

“[The event] would not have been the success it was without the vision and ground work of [senior] Jensen Near and [junior] Michelle Wright,” Vinci said.

Near and Wright encouraged students to participate in the even and connected them with faculty and staff donors, who contributed financially on their behalf.

In general, the Alumni Association reaches out to the student body through an alumni/student mentor program and an “Adopt-A-Wing” program. The alumni also provide a yearly scholarship through an essay writing contest.

“In the near future,” Vinci said, “we hope to assist the College by hosting events geared toward career training—how to interview for a job, write a resume, network, etc.”
